Rural communities account for 19.3% of the U.S. population;1 yet, they face some of the most significant barriers to high quality, cost-effective healthcare. In the past decade, the closure of many rural health facilities, especially Critical Access Hospitals, has accelerated. In January 2019, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) reported 95 rural hospitals had closed since 2010, with 32 of these having Critical Access Hospital designation.2
